PWCs (jet skis) Have Special Rules

  • A PWC must maintain at least 150 feet distance from other boats.This means that traveling around the island when other boats are “behind” the island is illegal.
  • Anyone riding on or being towed by a PWC must wear an approved PFD

  • Children under 7 must not ride or be towed by a PWC unless with a parent or guardian.

  • It is illegal to operate a PWC during the period that begins at sunset and ends at 8:00 a.m. “Sunset” means that time determined by the national weather service.

  • It is illegal to harass wildlife or disturb aquatic vegetation with a PWC.

  • It is illegal for someone under 14 to drive a PWC

  • Those 14 and 15 years of age may operate a PWC only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate and are with a parent or legal guardian

  • Those at least 16 years of age and born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate.

  • All operators born after December 31, 1978 (regardless of age) must have a boating safety certificate.
